Many years as an assistant has shown me the benefits of being organized and streamlined- as processes and routines in my work life made my time in the office more manageable, I started realizing how effectively my own personal life could be run if I took those same ideas home with me. I mean, in my personal life, I can be a little disorganized- sometimes I’ll go to the market, and get everything except something really basic like bananas- in my office life, this would never happen, because I would have a master list of everything I needed to buy from individual stores. I’ve been disorganized with my time and things my whole life, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve become increasingly interested in being more organized.
Beginning to treat my life with the care of an Executive Assistant is an overwhelming prospect. It’s also a lifelong project, as systems will change as my goals and lifestyle change. To start, here’s a basic idea of some of my goals and challenges:
Make my living space feel like a spa- I feel so much more calm and at ease when I have less things. I’m already constantly editing, but I think a more ruthless edit is in order.
Organize important paperwork- I feel such a sense of panic when I’m asked to locate an important form. Though I usually can, it would be much better to know I have everything I need, where it should be.
Emails should get down to 0!- Time to clear out all my email clutter and unsubscribe from anything not necessary.
Clean phone notes and photos- Digital clutter is real! Time to get rid of phone notes I don’t need. Also, I need to schedule time in my days/weeks to consistently digitally declutter.
Grocery shopping and cooking- These days, I typically fly by the seat of my pants when it comes to food. It would be much better to have a set schedule, and make sure I always have extra pre-made food in the freezer.
Seeing friends- It can be easy for me to get busy and not see friends, so it would be great to maybe schedule coffee with a friend each week, or plan some get togethers where I can invite several friends over.
Get more sleep- My #1 priority, in order to function in my life, is to get lots of sleep. I really need to schedule all my day’s activities on getting as much sleep as possible- ideally, 9-11 hours, though I’ve been noticing myself waking up naturally after 7 hours lately.
Learn more about food writing- I’ve recently become enamored with food writing, and want to learn more about it, by obviously reading important food books, watching documentaries, and tv shows by famous food critics.
Structure social media content output like a business- this one is tough for me because there’s so many ways to do this. But it’s a matter of making a decision and sticking to it, then adjusting when necessary.
I’ve also started creating something called a Life Binder, whichholds some of my master lists- it’s starting to be a great tool for me to have access to all the necessary things to run my life.
Consider this a series of overhauling my life. Hope this inspires you, or allows you to live vicariously through me. Or, if you’re an expert at this, feel free to send along your tips!
