Have trouble waking up in the morning? We all do, sometimes. Who wants to leave a cozy, warm bed after a long night of deep sleep? To help me enjoy my morning routine, and to feel more energized, I’ve made it a point to engage all my senses more. Not only are certain scents, etc. known to wake you up, but some of them can just make mornings so much more pleasant, that they may you look forward to getting out of bed- and I’m a big believer that enthusiasm translates to energy (ever notice how you are wide awake in the middle of the night when you have to wake up for an early flight for a vacation?) Here is how I capitalize on my sense of smell, sight, touch, taste, and hearing, for a morning routine I look forward to and thoroughly enjoy.
Fragrance helps me wake up most in the morning, I love diffusing essential oils by Veriditas like their Mental Clarity Formula (basil, lemon, peppermint, rosemary, grapefruit, and lavender), and sweet orange essential oil (reminds me of fresh squeezed orange juice in the morning!)
Other ideas: If you live surrounded by nature, maybe the scent from your garden, the forest, or the beach in your backyard helps you wake up. Or maybe you already enjoy the scent of coffee brewing in the morning and can be more mindful of it to more fully enjoy your mornings.
I love candlelight in the morning- It’s not necessarily energizing, but I love the magical setting it creates as I go about my routine- it makes me look forward to mornings. Keeping my room tidy at night helps give me a sense of calm in the morning. I love living in minimalist, organized beauty.
Other ideas: Allowing sunlight in the windows is a natural way to feel more awake. Vision boards are a great way to stay motivated for the day.
Meditating in a heated blanket is a really cozy start to the day! Sometimes I turn on a room heater so that I don’t stay too long in a warm bed- it will already be warm in my room, so my bed won’t be as tempting. I also really enjoy my skincare routine, and the feel of putting on different products- this, essential oils, and putting in my contacts, wakes me up the most.
Other ideas: A hot or cold shower, a brisk walk outside.
I like to start the day with a cup of matcha. I love the green color, the taste, and knowing that I’m doing something great for my body. I also love that it’s historically used in a ceremony, and that I can create my own ritual using it.
Other ideas: coffee, a certain type of tea you like, lemon water, fruit-infused water (try cucumber lemon mint- yum!).
Sometimes I’ll listen to an Abraham-Hicks recording; it’s like an uplifting spiritual sermon. I also like a guided meditation with background music.
Other ideas: Any relaxing music on your playlist/ YouTube, could go out in nature if you live near birds or the ocean, for example.
These are some of the things that currently work for me, but it may change from time to time, and there are no wrong choices to engage your senses to create the environment that you like best. And if your body simply wants more sleep, or you have a super fun event late at night? It’s okay if you do one or none of these things, too. Honor your body, live your life, and just use some of these as an enjoyable nudge, if you want, to help get you where you want to be.
